Daniel Frota de Abreu’s background is in graphic design, but it is in the meeting of languages and communication systems that his work occurs. In the video Braille Flute Piece (Closed Captioned), 2012, the artist tried to play a wind instrument with holes arranged as Braille. The words “spoken” by this flute are uselessly translated in captions on the screen, drawing nonsense out of incompatible systems of enunciation. By trying to derive intelligible sound from a language system designed to be ‘read’ by touch or visual reproduction, the artist underscores the impossibilities of communication.
